About this publication

Curiosity,
with a paper trail.

The Neame Chronicles explores a Kentish surname and the histories around it. The project is independent of Shepherd Neame.

A familiar name can hide an unfamiliar story. This publication starts there, then follows sources rather than assumptions.

A name is not a pedigree

The brewery family has a documented business history. The surname has a separate linguistic history. Other people called Neame need their own research. We do not join those threads without evidence.

What is here now

The collection contains 28 editorial stories, 36 people, 187 place and parcel references and 90 source records. It is a starting collection, with every substantial historical account attributed.

What is still missing

Original parish registers, wills, medieval rolls and brewery records have not yet been examined. The contemporary brewery photograph has a recorded Creative Commons licence. Further historical photographs and documents will be reproduced only after their rights and provenance are recorded. We have not added imaginary portraits or invented archive pages to fill that gap.

Artwork and evidence

The layered landscape artwork and typographic pieces are modern interpretations made for this site. They are not historical maps, documents or views of particular historic buildings. The small geographic plot uses verified coordinates. The archive also reproduces one panel of a genuine John Speed map from 1611, credited to BnF/Gallica. It is not used as a geographic overlay. The working atlas uses OpenStreetMap and verified heritage coordinate records.

Help the collection grow

A useful contribution names its source: an archive reference, a dated photograph with rights information, or a record that ties a person to a place. The project does not yet collect submissions through a web form. No personal details are requested here.
