Keep the doubt.
Research is a trail another reader should be able to follow. Published accounts are useful. They are not a substitute for inspecting the records they describe.
How to read the collection
Original notices, land transcriptions, memorial accounts and oral histories also support the wider collection. Company history is used for the company’s stated chronology and reported family relationships. Historic England and local authority material supply heritage context. Surname scholarship is treated separately from genealogy. Many original archival records have not yet been examined. The official Gazette notices and contemporary survey material are distinguished from later transcriptions and company histories.
A cited record directly supports the specific connection.
Supported but incompleteA later account reports a connection, with primary evidence still to inspect.
Possible connection / name match onlyA research lead. No family edge or exact map location follows from a shared name.
Unrelated or unknownNo supported link is established.
Research register
The machine-readable register records source URLs, access dates, claims, confidence and original research status. Draft status in that register records the research stage. The pages publish carefully attributed accounts, with their limitations retained.
Open the research register ↗Known gaps
- Original parish registers, wills, medieval rolls and brewery family papers have not been inspected. Published accounts and later transcriptions remain explicitly attributed.
- No evidence currently joins all independent Neame branches to the brewing pedigree. A shared surname is not a family relationship.
- The online Faversham Part 2 schedule is headed 30 September 1839. The original manuscript and parcel geometry remain unexamined; the parcel numbers are not map coordinates.
- The Oxford surname explanation was inspected through a reproduced dictionary entry. The original edition and the alleged medieval forms need direct examination.
- The 1543 Nonington marriage is known from a derivative transcription, not the original register.
- Exact signpost location, overseas migration routes and wider family relationships have not been established.
- Historical brewery dates differ between company and heritage accounts. Original evidence is needed to resolve the competing site chronologies.
- 11 place references have verified points. Other location references remain in the readable directory without invented coordinates.
- The archive currently reproduces one 1611 map panel and one licensed contemporary photograph. Other records link to their custodians; no reproduction permission is implied.
Reproduction rights
One contemporary brewery photograph is reproduced under CC BY-SA 2.0 with visible attribution. The archive includes a public-domain John Speed map panel dated 1611. Other historical source records are links. Read the asset rights register. Before adding an asset, record its creator, original repository, item reference, creation date, licence or permission, permitted uses, attribution and any alterations. A public web page is not a reproduction licence.
