The place and its story

Calcutta, written in Ickham

In an Ickham memorial transcription, two sons of John and Elizabeth Neame are recorded as having died at Calcutta: Austin and George.

The remembrance names eight children. Another son, John, appears at St Dunstan’s in Canterbury. A village church record opens onto a much wider world.

Nearby entries follow other Neames, including an Austin remembered as a former Major in the 98th Regiment. Why did the sons go to Calcutta? The inscription does not say. Their names and that distant city are enough to make us want to find out.
