The place and its story

An only son’s goodbye

John Rigden Neame put up a tablet at Wye for his parents. Its words describe his loss as irreparable.

The inscription records his father John’s death in 1814 and his mother Sarah’s in 1820. It calls John Rigden their only son and places him at Rushelt.

That gives us a family relationship and a place to look next. It also gives us something a pedigree chart cannot: a son’s remembrance of losing his parents.
