Two brothers in three months

1916 changed who ran the brewery.

Arthur Neame died of pneumonia in 1916. Alick died three months later. Their brother Harry became the sole managing director.

At the same time, wartime restrictions squeezed ingredients, taxes rose and labour was short. The company history records women being hired to fill the gap.

The business had become a limited company only two years earlier. Behind that neat corporate date was a family trying to carry on after two deaths.
