Hoath field names · A historic tithe entry
His name. Her pasture.
A Hoath field carries a tenant’s name.
Neames’ Hammel sounds like Neame property. The tithe entry tells a different story.
Thomas Neame Senior occupied the pasture. The owner was the Dowager Marchioness of Conyngham. His name was on the field, while hers was in the ownership column.
Plot 121 measured 3 roods and 17 perches, less than an acre. We cannot yet draw its boundary on today’s map. We can still follow its name, which has survived in much finer detail than a modern road sign.
