Ash parish churchyard and church
A 1486 will asks for gravel to mend a road. Thomas Neame was one of its executors.
The place and its story
A cow for Cristine. Gravel for the road.
Cristine was to get a cow. The servant John Peret was to get a cow and barley. The road between Ash and Molond cross was to get 25 cartloads of gravel.
John Neme put those provisions in his will on 1 April 1486. His wife Mariott was to keep his lands for life. Thomas Neame was named as an executor alongside her and Nicholas Pope.
The bequests do not tell us whether the road was repaired. They do let us meet a household through its cows, crops and a road needing attention. For another glimpse of ordinary life, follow the name to a wedding in Nonington.
