A cow for the church

Henry Neame left a very practical memorial.

When Henry Neame made his will in June 1544, he left the church a cow for an obit, a memorial observance. That is one way to be remembered.

His son John was to receive £13 6s. 8d. at twenty-one. Henry also set out what should happen if the boy died before then. The residue went to his wife Jone.

The published will abstract names his uncle John Bowlys as overseer. His father and father-in-law were executors, but their names are left out. A cow survives in the account more clearly than two unnamed executors.

Arthur Hussey’s published Ash will abstract, printed page 59 (PDF page index 10), dated 17 June 1544. Probate is recorded as 18 December 1545. Original will not inspected. The gift is a will provision, not proof of delivery or a performed service. No wider pedigree is inferred.
