Birchington woodland · Birchington
Who left their name in the wood?
A small wood. A farmer whose first name is missing.
You can still find Neame in Birchington without opening a book. It is on a road sign, and on a small wood beside Crispe Park.
The local Heritage Trust traces the woodland name to an important farmer and landowner. Frustratingly, that account leaves his first name out. The wood is only 0.72 hectares. The question behind it is bigger.
Next door, a schoolchild won the competition to name Crispe Park before its opening in May 1985. One neighbourhood, two very different ways for a place to get its name.
Take Neame Road next. A letter found in a hedge offers another clue.
