The Neames behind the grand house

Quex had tenants as well as owners.

Quex brings a mansion to mind. The Neames in this part of its story were tenant farmers.

The Heritage Trust places John and William Neame among the tenants in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Its account also describes the house in poor repair. The grand setting had practical problems.

These men did not need to own the mansion to leave a mark on its history. Follow the rented ground, farm names and nearby memorials, and the estate starts to look like a place where people worked.
