West Brabourne map names · A letter attributed to about 1940

Please put my house name back

An owner wrote to Ordnance Survey about two words.

Lieutenant Colonel L.G.C. Neame wanted The Limes taken off the map. His house, he said, should be called The Hall.

In a letter preserved in a name-book transcription, the West Brabourne owner asked Ordnance Survey to restore the name. He said it was the original one, dating from the house’s construction in Queen Anne’s reign. The editor puts the undated letter at about 1940.

We have not settled the building date. We do have an owner making sure the national map used his preferred house name. If a map is wrong, sometimes the next step is a letter.
