Woodnesborough church: the Neame bell
A historical bell inscription transcription names Richard Neame and Richard Pordage as churchwardens in 1676.
The place and its story
A Neame on the bell
Richard Neame’s name appears on a bell inscription at Woodnesborough, dated 1676. Beside him is Richard Pordage. Both are named as churchwardens.
The makers Christopher and John Hodson appear in the same inscription. It preserves the names of the people behind an ordinary parish object.
Zechariah Cozens recorded the inscription in notes from about 1795. We have not checked the bell today. Follow the transcription and you find another way a Neame name lasted: on something made to be heard.
