A Neame on the bell
Richard was a churchwarden, and his name was cast in metal.
Richard Neame’s name appears on a bell inscription at Woodnesborough, dated 1676. Beside him is Richard Pordage. Both are named as churchwardens.
The makers Christopher and John Hodson appear in the same inscription. It preserves the names of the people behind an ordinary parish object.
Zechariah Cozens recorded the inscription in notes from about 1795. We have not checked the bell today. Follow the transcription and you find another way a Neame name lasted: on something made to be heard.

No relationship to other Neames established. An earlier Faussett transcription on the same page gives 1667. This story follows Cozens’s 1676 reading. The original bell date remains to be checked.
